Florence, Alabama

Florence is located in the northwestern corner of Alabama. It is the county seat of Lauderdale County, the biggest city in the Shoals area and the primary economic hub for Northwestern Alabama. This community is most known for its many historical attractions, fun annual events and picturesque downtown area.

Brief History of Florence

The land that is known as Florence today was originally occupied by Chickasaw tribes. However, the federal government took control of the land during the early part of the nineteenth century. Shortly after the government took over the land, they sold a portion of it to the Cypress Land Company.

The area was named Florence after the surveyor's hometown in Italy. Town officials held two land sales in Florence: one in 1818 and the other in 1823. About 180 people purchased land during these sales, and among them was President Andrew Jackson. While the town struggled a bit during the Civil War, it recovered rather quickly and became the thriving city it is today.
